Wilderness is not a luxury but a necessity of the human spirit, and as vital to our lives as water and good bread. ~Edward Abbey

Derek has been leading trips, teaching, and coaching around the world since 1996. He has taught students from 1st grade to 12th grade in math, social studies, language arts, P.E/health and has loved his time leading outdoor and experiential education trips, and coaching soccer, basketball, and speech and debate. Growing up in Canada, he did his first ski traverses and snowy peaks in junior and senior high school. In University Derek was lucky to spend many credit hours in the mountains and rivers, gaining swift water rescue certifications and enhancing his glacier travel skills. He managed to bag a few peaks in Peru before mellowing his endeavors and starting a family, at times taking young Ela into the mountains with them. Derek and his family have lived, traveled, and worked in Canada, China, Yemen, Columbia, and Belarus. He has visited and explored over 40 countries in his life. While working for Outward Bound, he led month-long Mountaineering courses following his passion for travel, the outdoors, and education. Derek and his wife Lisa have led numerous experiential and service-learning trips to parts of the US, Canada, Latin America, Europe, and Asia. Since moving back to San Juan Island in 2015, Derek, Lisa, and their two daughters Ela and Zea have been building a more permanent home and enjoying what the islands have to offer.
