Marieke has been a San Juan Island resident since she was born, and developed a passion for art at Spring Street, where she graduated as an alum in 2020. She went on to get a BFA at Columbus College of Art and Design in 2D animation, with a double minor in art history and fashion design. During her freshman year of college, when her school was online due to covid, Marieke TA’d Spring Street’s middle school art class and discovered a spark of enthusiasm for teaching that she was eager to feed. And while she enjoyed her time in Ohio, her heart remains in the islands, so she’s come full circle returning to San Juan to teach visual art at Spring Street. Outside of work, Marieke loves to paddle board, swim, and learn new hands-on crafts like indigo dyeing, quilting, and book binding.
