English as a Second Language

The ESL program at SSIS provides international students with a whole language learning experience in English and mainstreams them into the college preparatory curriculum. First year ESL students, with TOEFL scores lower than 550, take an ESL English class as well as an ESL tutorial. In addition, these students are mainstreamed in history, math, and science according to their subject-area level and ability. After the first year, students are mainstreamed according to their English abilities.

ESL English

The purpose of this class is to prepare students for mainstream English classes. Vocabulary and reading comprehension are developed by teaching learning strategies, as well as reading English literature and subject-based material (such as science and humanities excerpts). For writing, students learn to create standard formats for descriptive, expository, persuasive, research, and creative essays, in addition to practicing grammar and editing skills. Listening and speaking skills are enhanced through in-class discussion and speech presentations, as well as phonics and pronunciation lessons.

ESL Tutorial

The purpose of this class is aid students in their integration into the school environment. The class focuses on enhancing comprehension of their mainstream classes, as well as preparing them for standardized tests, experiential education trips, and other activities that they will encounter during their time at school. SAT and TOEFL test preparation is included in the class, in addition to subject-area lectures, test review sessions, and discussions about American culture and customs.

The SSIS residence has a large common room for activities and studying . It has a large dining room and kitchen, equipped with everything to make the students need.

Campus Life: We are a small school where teachers and students know each other well and we engender respect with strong mentoring relationships. The setting and atmosphere is informal and comforting, but there is an expectation of hard work and academic discipline. Students find support whenever they need it.

Orientation
Foreign students normally arrive a few days prior to the beginning of the academic year for orientation. This period of time is devoted to activities that will help them feel more “at ease ” when school begins. Activities will include ESL classes, getting to know the village, the island and the island communities and meeting other students. (Housing during this orientation period may not be in the same home that you will live in once school begins.)
