MA, Educational Leadership, Columbia University

Louis O’Prussack is the new Director of SSIS. Louis officially joined the school on July 1, 2008. For the last 16 years, he has been Assistant Head of School at a small, college preparatory boarding-day school in Ojai, California. The Besant Hill School has a strong focus on creative expression and Louis taught mathematics and physics, in addition to his administrative duties. He and his wife Jennifer are very excited to be moving back to the Northwest, and to be bringing their two young children, Caeden and Aiyana to a place that they love. The whole family is looking forward with great anticipation to living in a place where the word community has real depth and meaning behind it, and where integrity, understanding, and compassion are a vital part of the fabric of the community.

A graduate of Oberlin College with a B.A. in Classics, Louis briefly attended medical school, studied mathematics at the University of Washington for 15 months, and recently received his M.A. in Educational Leadership at Columbia University. Ph.D. Chemistry, Purdue University

Dr. John Phillips has both a BA (Western Maryland College) and a PhD (Purdue University) in Chemistry. “I have three lovely daughters. The oldest, Beth, is currently a Peace Corps volunteer in Uganda, where she works in an agricultural community as a youth HIV/AIDS educator; next is Kate, a 2008 graduate of Lewis & Clark College., who will head to Thailand in September to teach English on a Fulbright scholarship for the next year; and last, but not least, Maddy, who is a 2008 high school graduate and is headed to the University of Redlands in southern California for college, where she hopes to major in ethnic studies and Spanish, as well as play for the soccer and lacrosse teams.

I love the outdoors, and given my new location, am in the market for a kayak. I am also an avid bicyclist, who after years of Seattle/Bellevue car traffic, is contemplating being “car-free” on the island. I’m also into applied microbiology, as I am a serious hobby baker (sourdough is a specialty), and a home brewer. I love yeast!”

Heather June – High School English Language Arts

BA Philosophy - University of Colorado at Boulder

MA English - Wester Washington University

MA Education - Seattle Pacific University

People and their stories fascinate Heather. By the third grade, she was voraciously collecting detail and writing it down. Heather writes both fiction and non-fiction, and holds master’s degrees in English (from Western Washington University) and in Education (from Seattle Pacific University). She got her BA in Philosophy from University of Colorado at Boulder. She loves gardening in the islands, hiking, camping, and snowboarding in the mountains, and singing around a campfire. Nature fuels her spirit. A former gymnast, she enjoys the kinesthetic learning of acrobatics and dance. When teaching, Heather asks questions that generate awareness not only of what we are thinking, but also of how we are thinking. She looks forward with great pleasure to teaching high school students and Spring Street International School. Her son, Jed Lewis, will enter the 7th grade at SSIS.
