Spring Street International School mixes quality classroom education with experiential education, offering transformational experiences that combine diverse cultural experience with curriculum and an ethic of community service.
We believe that students excel when:
- The learner is a participant rather than a spectator in learning.
- Learners are engaged intellectually, emotionally, socially and physically.
- Learning has present and future relevance for the learner.
- Learners are actively engaged in posing questions and problem solving.

Friday Harbor Labs Science Outreach Program is a unique science education program that brings exciting, inquiry-based and relevant environmental science into the elementary, middle and high school classrooms (K-12) of the San Juan Islands. We have developed a set of hands-on projects
specifically designed to compliment and enhance the current science curriculum at local schools. All of the projects focus on involving students in the process of science – observing, asking questions, predicting, collecting data, analyzing data and making conclusions. We emphasize using the scientific method and how the data is relevant to other scientists.
The program gives students the opportunity to ask questions and participate in experiments so they realize they themselves are scientists. We work with students in the field, lab and classroom to show that science is fun and important. The program provides experiences that foster students to become environmentally aware and scientifically educated stewards of local marine and freshwater environments.
Friday Harbor Labs Science Outreach Program (FHLSOP) was established in 2001 and is structured as a partnership between the University of Washington Friday Harbor Laboratories, San Juan Island School District, the Spring Street International School, and the San Juan Islands Conservation District. The resulting program is distinct in its partnering of research scientists, K-12 students and teachers, and resource managers with the goal of creating an integrated set of projects that teach science and environmental awareness to students.
