SSIS At-A-Glance

Independent, Accredited – Outstanding!

Location: Friday Harbor, Washington, USA – is a town of 2,000 on rural San Juan Island. It is the county seat of San Juan County (total population 16,275) Ferry Arrives!San Juan Island, one of four major American islands in the Olympics “rain shadow,” located off the coast of Washington and reached by Washington State Ferry, plane, or private transportation. The other major San Juan Islands serviced by the ferry system are Lopez, Orcas and Shaw.

Student Population: Approximately 76 students, including 12 international students from countries such as China, Korea, Vietnam, Germany and Sri Lanka

Enrollment: Spring Street International School is a specialized center of learning, blending rigorous academics, a family-oriented setting and experiential education. Started in 1995 in response to fervent community interest, Spring Street International has blossomed into a vital asset to its community as an educational choice tuned to individual development and growth.

Today the school is a private, non-profit, coeducational, college preparatory day school, serving grades 6-12, with an enrollment of approximately 76 students, including international students from five nations. We draw families from throughout the San Juan Islands, with students from Lopez, Shaw, and Orcas islands commuting daily by ferry, as well as day-boarders from the Puget Sound area, including Whidbey Island.

Student/Teacher Ratios:  We integrate rigorous academics with personalized attention and small class sizes. The student to teacher ratio averages less than 10 to 1.

Accreditations: Northwest Association of Accredited School (NAAS) – candidate member Pacific Northwest Association of Independent Schools (PNAIS)

As an independent school, our teachers and administrators are accountable directly to students and parents and we are free to select our own goals and curricula in the pursuit of the highest quality education. Spring Street focuses on the teaching of critical thinking skills and developing intellectually curious students for higher education and life-long learning.

Founded: 1995 – now in 14th year of service to our communities and students

Facilities: A two-acre in town-campus with five major buildings, eight classrooms, computer lab, science lab and residence for international students within 200 meters of the campus.

The safe, idyllic nature of Friday Harbor and the proximity of town services make a wonderful combination for young students seeking high quality education and placement in fine schools of higher learning.

Teaching: 7 full time teachers and 6 part-time specialists in arts/humanities, math, ESL (English as a 2nd language) training and specialized tutoring.

Graduates in College: SSIS has graduated over 100 students since 1999. Ninety-five percent of SSIS students attend excellent universities – and most of those - attend the college of their first choice.

What makes a student a Spring Street International School kid? Our students are individualistic, adaptable, outspoken and inquisitive about the world and their place in it. They are intellectually curious students who see learning as a joy and a challenge. They contribute positively to the school community. They are taught to think critically and not to fear a controversial view, as long as it can be defended and articulated.
